The Bhutan InfoComm and Media Authority (BICMA) recently hosted a South Asian Telecommunications Regulator Council (SATRC)- Spectrum Working Group (Spec-WG) Meeting from 20-21 May 2026 at Hotel Ariya, Thimphu Bhutan in collaboration with the Asia Pacific Telecommunity (APT).
The meeting was inaugurated by Hon’ble Lyonpo Namgyal Dorji, Minister of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Employment, and was attended by expert delegates from the Telecom Regulators from SATRC member countries, and the affiliate industry members such as Huawei, Ericsson, GSMA, as well as the local officials from the GovTech Agency, local telecom operators and related industries.
The SATRC Spec-WG specifically focuses on technical and regulatory aspects of spectrum management, including spectrum harmonization, efficient allocation and assignment practices, spectrum pricing, refarming, and coexistence studies. The recent SATRC Spec-WG 2026 mainly discussed three work items relevant to the spectrum and telecommunications industry, namely;
1. Use of Unlicensed Spectrum- Potentials and Challenges for SATRC Countries.
2. Impact of technological evolution on the price of spectrum for mobile broadband- Case study in the SATRC member countries.
3. Regulatory Approaches to Enable V-band use for High- Capacity Wireless Application.
